Google Maps business categories, and how to pick them

By the MapsData team · Last updated

Every business on Google Maps lists itself under one primary category and up to several more, chosen from Google's own fixed list. Picking the right category is the biggest single decision in building a lead list from Google Maps: too narrow and you miss businesses, too broad and the list fills with people who will never buy. This guide covers how the categories work and how to choose them.

How Google Maps categories work

Business owners pick their categories from a list Google maintains. They cannot invent one. That makes categories far more reliable than keywords: a dentist who chose Dentist as a category is a dentist, whatever words appear in the business name. MapsData's category list holds over 4,000 Google business categories, from Accountant to Zoo.

Two details trip people up:

  • Regional spellings are separate categories. Google uses local terms outside the US. A search for dentist in MapsData offers Dentist, Cosmetic dentist, Pediatric dentist and Paediatric Dentist. In the UK and Australia you will also meet Estate agent and Removalist where the US says real estate agency and mover.
  • The listing's categories are not all equal. Each business has a primary category plus additional ones. The categories column in your export lists all of them, so you can filter afterwards.

How to choose categories for your offer

  1. Start with what your buyer calls themselves. Selling patient-booking software? Dentist and Orthodontist, not Health.
  2. Add close neighbors, not distant cousins. A roofing offer fits Roofing contractor and Gutter cleaning service; General contractor pulls in a much wider group.
  3. Check regional spellings when you sell outside the US. Search the term once and take every variant that fits.
  4. Use the related-category option to widen coverage when a category is small in your area.
  5. Read the first results. Download a small list first and look at the categories column before you run a whole state.

Niche searches that categories miss

Some specialists hide under a broad category: third-party logistics firms under Logistics service, CNC shops under Machine shop. For a handful of these, MapsData also offers a specialist search term, marked as a keyword in the picker, that surfaces businesses the category alone buries.

Category names change over time as Google updates its list, so search the picker for the current spelling before you run a large job.

Picking categories from code or an AI agent

The API validates every category against the same list, and GET /api/v1/categories?q=plumb returns the exact names to use. Through the MCP server, an assistant calls mapsdata_search_categories first, so it never guesses. Once you have the category, see what each column in the export means.

Frequently asked questions

How many Google Maps business categories are there?
Several thousand. MapsData's list holds over 4,000 Google business categories, plus the regional spellings Google uses in the UK, Canada and Australia, such as Estate agent and Removalist.
Why can't I type any search term I like?
Searching a real Google category returns the businesses that list themselves under it. A loose phrase such as 'companies that fix roofs' returns a looser mix, so MapsData has you pick from real categories and offers related ones to widen the search.
Should I search one category or several?
Start with the category your buyers use for themselves, then add close neighbors. A roofing offer might cover Roofing contractor and Gutter cleaning service. Different spellings, such as Pediatric dentist and Paediatric Dentist, count as separate categories.
